Google Goggles bring visual search ton Android; To Favorite Places bring aileron code ton restaurant reviews

Looks like Google's been busy on the camera tip lately -- not only is it launching a new QR code-based Favorite Places mobile search product today, it's also demoing Google Goggles, a visual search app that generates local results from analyzing mobile phone images. Favorite Places isn't super-complicated, but it sounds like it'll be pretty useful: Google's sent QR code window decals to the 100,000 most researched local businesses on Google and Google Maps, and scanning the code with your phone will bring up reviews, coupons, and offer the ability to star the location for later. (It's not implemented yet, but you'll be able to leave your own reviews in the future.) Google hasn't built this into the Google Mobile app yet, so you'll need something to read QR codes with -- Android devices can use the free Barcode Scanner, and Google and QuickMark are offering 40,000 free downloads of QuickMark for the iPhone today. We just tried it out using QuickMark and it works pretty well -- although we'll wait to see how many QR codes we see in the wild before we call this one totally useful.

Google Goggles is a little more interesting from a technology standpoint: it's an Android app that takes photos, tries to recognize what in them, and then generates search results about them. Goggles can recognize landmarks, books, contact info, artwork, places, wine, and logos at the moment, and Google says it's working on adding other types of objects, like plants. Pretty neat stuff -- but how about linking these two services together at some point, guys? Check some videos after the break.

Analyst noise: Apple tablet in March for $1k, publishers on board, Verizon iPhone coming too

If you've been following mainstream news today, then it's likely you've seen the story doing the rounds on new Apple tablet rumors, spurred by a note sent to clients from Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner. Never heard of him? That's not surprising, since he has no real connection to Apple, and his job mainly consists of telling people how to move their money around -- a Master of the Universe gear-cranker, you might say. Anyhow, Yair is sure that Apple will be releasing its 10.1-inch, multitouch tablet around March or April, with a ramp-up on production sometime in February. He also notes that the device will sell for $1,000 (so far we've heard rumored price points from $699 all the way up to $2,000), but ultimately Reiner seems most concerned with how it will impact Amazon, the Kindle, and book and media publishers.

According to the note, Apple has been in talks with publishers concerning a "very attractive proposal" in which the company will split revenue with publishing houses 70 / 30, as they do with iTunes and App Store sales (just as we speculated in our post on the Time Inc. digimag). What's most disconcerting about the report is that it seems more interested in disrupting or dismissing what Amazon is doing (particularly noteworthy as the company is in the midst of its biggest season for Kindle sales ever). When financial analysts start squawking in this manner, we like to approach with caution. As of right now, we have zero solid evidence that Apple is even producing a tablet, let alone ready to drop one for a G come March. We have heard plenty of other rumors that corroborate much of this, but if the above is the plan, you can expect a big reveal from Cupertino around the time of Macworld or CES, so you won't have to wait long to know the truth. For now, keep your BS detectors set to "stun."

I got an Otter Box with my phone a couple months ago. It does a great
job protecting the phone. My only complaint is the attachment to the
belt clip/holder is not real secure, and therefore my phone has jumped
out a few times.

Hi.
I seem to notice no appreciable difference when using the iPhone with 3G turned
off, even radio seems to stream just fine when using Edge..

Is this typical? Is the Edge network supposed to be noticeably slower than 3G?

Today or tomorrow I'll be switching from AT&T to Verizon. Perforce,
I'll no longer be using the iPhone, at least not as a phone. This is
not the fault of the iPhone, but rather that of AT&T.

No, I'm not getting a Droid. There is no local-sync option for it and
that is a deal-killer for me. In all likelihood, I'll be getting the
newish HTC Imagio.

My guess is they would only waive the fee due to poor coverage if you cancel in
a very short time after initiating the contract (like 30 days). A few years ago
(pre iPhone) I switched from AT&T to Verizon. The Verizon service at my home was
awful, even though it worked elsewhere. I canceled Verizon and went back to
AT&T.

Ouch that is about 1.7 times my normal monthly total AT&T bill or as much as
AT&T & Verizon combined with 4 lines. I **think** AT&T has an option that
you can add something like "International Coverage" to your plan on a
month-by-month basis so that if say you are going out of the country the 3rd
week in August, you would add the service the 2nd week and then turn the
service off the 2nd week of September so that you are covered during the
billing cycle of when you will be traveling.

I would recommend disabling all e-mail checking and other features that use
the data portion. Even if you don't receive any e-mail, leaving your phone
on to check 2-4 accounts every 15 minutes could end up costing you hundreds
of dollars.

How do you like it and what don't you like about it. I just purchased one and it
